Liebe Postdoktorand*innen,

ich grüße Sie als neue Vizepräsidentin der CAU und freue mich sehr, dass zu meinen Aufgaben die Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses gehört. Im derzeit gängigen Sprachgebrauch schließt diese Formulierung ja auch Sie als Wissenschaftler*innen mit Doktortitel ein. Die Universität hat die Gruppe der promovierten Wissenschaftler*innen lange Zeit entgegen ihrer Bedeutung für die universitäre Forschung nicht hinreichend in den Blick genommen. Umso mehr freue ich mich, dass wir mit dem 2018 gegründeten Postdoc-Zentrum an der CAU eine zentrale Anlaufstelle geschaffen haben, die über alle Disziplinen hinweg promovierten Wissenschaftler*innen die Möglichkeit der Vernetzung und des Austauschs, der Information und der individuellen Unterstützung bei der Planung einer akademischen und außeruniversitären Karriere bietet. Uns ist als Leitung der CAU aber auch daran gelegen, über die Postdoc-Vertretung Ihre Stimme zu hören, um die Belange der promovierten Wissenschaftler*innen bei universitären Entscheidungen berücksichtigen zu können. Ich freue mich auf den Austausch mit Ihnen und wünsche Ihnen trotz der ungewöhnlichen Umstände eine schöne Vorweihnachtszeit, bleiben Sie gesund!

Im Folgenden möchten wir, die Leiterin des Postdoc-Zentrums und die Postdoc-Vertretung der CAU, uns noch einmal an Sie und Euch wenden mit Informationen dazu, was uns im Jahr 2020 beschäftigt hat, was wir erreicht und vollendet haben und welche Aufgaben wir für das Jahr 2021 sehen.

Seit Beginn des Jahres 2020 haben wir gemeinsam mit der vormaligen Vizepräsidentin für wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs und dem Leiter des Geschäftsbereiches Strategie und Planung die Satzung des Postdoc-Zentrums entwickelt. Sie ist mit der Veröffentlichung der Satzung des Postdoc-Zentrums im Nachrichtenblatt des Ministeriums für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Kultur am 17. Dezember 2020 in Kraft getreten. Damit ist die Etablierung des Postdoc-Zentrums als Zentrale Einrichtung der CAU abgeschlossen und es können die Gremien (Direktorium, Beirat und Postdoc-Vertretung) offiziell besetzt werden. Um dies vorzubereiten, hat sich die Postdoc-Vertretung eine umfängliche Geschäftsordnung gegeben und diese dem Präsidium vorgestellt. Hier wurde sie positiv zur Kenntnis genommen. Durch die Geschäftsordnung ist nunmehr das Wahlverfahren zur Vertretung der an der CAU tätigen Postdocs geregelt, wie auch alles weitere rund um die Vertretung. Damit wird insbesondere der Weg frei für die Wahl einer neuen Postdoc-Vertretung an der CAU, die die gegenwärtige Vertretung (Dr. Viktoria Bachmann, Dr. Sönke Burmeister, Dr. Meike Stumpp) ablösen wird. Die Vertretung wird im Direktorium des Postdoc-Zentrums eine wichtige Rolle spielen, da die Gruppe der Postdocs neben der/dem Vizepräsident*in für den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs als Sprecher*in, einer/einem Stellvertrer*in und der Geschäftsführung des Zentrums mit zwei Personen vertreten sein wird. Zeitnah werden wir Sie zu einer virtuellen Vollversammlung der Zielgruppe des Postdoc-Zentrums am 2. Februar 2021, 14.00-16.00 Uhr einladen. Hier wird Sie im ersten Teil die neue Vizepräsidentin für den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs der CAU begrüßen, weiterhin wird sich das Zentrum noch einmal kurz vorstellen und das Programm zur Internen Forschungsförderung der CAU eingeführt. Im zweiten Teil soll die Wahl einer neuen Postdoc-Vertretung in die Wege geleitet und laden Sie herzlich ein, für dieses Amt zu kandidieren. Wählbar sind alle Mitglieder der Zielgruppe des Postdoc-Zentrums, d.h. alle an der Universität wissenschaftlich tätigen Promovierten, die sich in der zweiten Phase der wissenschaftlichen Qualifizierung befinden. Da wir den Begriff Postdoc sehr weit fassen, sind auch Juniorprofessor*innen wählbar. Bitte überlegen Sie, ob eine Kandidatur für Sie in Frage kommt, wir werden Anfang 2021 mit einer Abfrage auf Sie zukommen, wer sich als Kandidat*in aufstellen lassen möchte. Sie können aber auch jetzt schon Ihr Interesse bekunden indem Sie eine Nachricht an die Adresse an postdoc-representation@pz.uni-kiel.de schicken.

Seit seiner Gründung im Sommer 2018 haben mehr als 50 Postdoktorand*innen das Angebot einer vertraulichen, individuellen Beratung im Postdoc-Zentrum wahrgenommen, allein im Jahr 2020 mehr als 20 Personen. Überwiegend ging es um Beratungen zum weiteren Karriereweg -innerhalb und ausserhalb der Wissenschaft, aber auch für Konflikte wurde nach Lösungen gesucht. Dieses Angebot besteht selbstverständlich auch in 2021! Ebenso besteht das Angebot, im Anschluss an eine Beratung das eigene Thema im Rahmen eines Coachings der Wissenschaftlichen Weiterbildung weiter zu bearbeiten.

In Umsetzung befindet sich weiterhin auch der Aktionsplan des Personalentwicklungkonzeptes. Im Konzept sind auch Maßnahmen zur Karriereförderung von Postdocs und Juniorprofessor*innen verankert – unter anderem sind genannt: Informationen zu akademischen Karrierewegen, regelmäßige Karrieregespräche und Unterstützung beim Beschreiten außeruniversitärer Karrierewege. Bereits umgesetzt wurde eine erste Begrüßungsveranstaltung für Wissenschaftler*innen unterhalb der Professur, die neu an die CAU gekommen sind. Weitere Veranstaltungen mussten Corona-bedingt leider ausfallen. Ebenfalls umgesetzt wurde eine Veranstaltungsreihe zu akademischen Karrierewegen und deren rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen, Fördermöglichkeiten im europäischen und nationalen Kontext und Informationen dazu, wie Anträge erfolgreich geschrieben werden. Diese Reihe soll im Rahmen einer online-Veranstaltung einmal pro Semester fortgesetzt werden, jeweils alternierend auf Deutsch und Englisch. Weiterhin in Bearbeitung und Abstimmung ist ein Konzept zur Etablierung von Karrierereflexionen, das zunächst entsprechende Gespräche für eine Pilotgruppe vorsieht.

Mit dem Zukunftsvertrag Studium und Lehre stärken (ZSL) wollen Bund und Länder ab 2021 in der Nachfolge des Hochschulpaktes gemeinsam und auf Dauer die Qualität von Studium und Lehre verbessern und bedarfsgerecht die Studienkapazitäten in Deutschland erhalten. Davon werden fast drei Millionen Studierende profitieren. Durch die dauerhafte Förderung kann insbesondere der Ausbau unbefristeter Beschäftigungsverhältnisse des mit Studium und Lehre befassten Personals an den Hochschulen unterstützt werden. Hierzu sind wir mit Präsidium und dem Personalrat Wissenschaft als Interessenvertretung weiterhin in Kontakt geblieben und haben wiederholt konkrete Vorschläge zu Kategorien und Vergabemodalitäten für die zu schaffenden Stellen eingereicht. Zum ZSL wurde wiederholt im Senat informiert, z.B. am 16. Dezember 2020. Dort wurde berichtet, dass die Diskussionen zum Zukunftsvertrag mit dem Ministerium Anfang des nächsten Jahres in die Endphase gehen. Geplant ist ab März sowohl befiristete Stellen, Dauerstellen und auch Professuren auszuschreiben.

Ein wichtiger Meilenstein für die Postdocs an der CAU war der Umbau der Wissenschaftskommission, so dass die Promovierenden- und Postdoc-Vertretung der CAU dort ab 2020 mit je einer Stimme vertreten sind. Zur Wissenschaftskommission lädt das Präsidium die Dekan*innen der Fakultäten sowie die Schwerpunktsprecher*innen ein, um wesentliche Fragen der Abstimmung und der strategischen Planung, vorrangig hinsichtlich der Forschung, zu beraten. Die Wissenschaftskommission hat beispielsweise das Thema des DenkRaumes ausgewählt, der 2021 in seine erste Runde startet.

Seit 15. November stehen die fünf DenkRaum Fellows der CAU fest! Dr. Viktoria Bachmann, Dr. Annika Hanert, Dr. Jonas Hein, Dr. Julia Kroh und Dr. Sören Weissermel werden am 1. Januar 2021 ihre DenkRaum Fellowships antreten. Der DenkRaum ist ein Think Tank der CAU, in dem durch inter- und transdiszplinäres Arbeiten jenseits der Grenzen der eigenen Disziplin ein gemeinsames, gesellschaftlich relevantes Thema exploriert wird. Die nächsten zwei Jahre werden die Philosophin, die Psychologin, die Betriebswirtin und die beiden Geographen gemeinsam und zusammen mit Akteur*innen aus Gesellschaft, Wirtschaft und Politik zum Zukunftsthema Urban Design. Dear Postdocs,

I would like to greet you as new Vice-President of Kiel University and I am very pleased that one of my tasks is to promote young researchers. In its current usage, this wording also includes you as researches holding a doctorate. For a long time, the university has not paid sufficient attention to the group of postdoctoral researchers, despite their importance for research. I am therefore all the more pleased that with the Postdoc Center of the university, founded in 2018, we have established a central point of contact that offers postdoctoral researchers across all disciplines the opportunity to network and exchange information as well as individual support in planning an academic and non-academic career. However, we as the management of Kiel University are also interested in hearing your voice through the postdoc representation in order to be able to take the concerns of postdoctoral researchers into account in university decisions. I look forward to exchanging ideas with you and, despite the extraordinary circumstances, I wish you a wonderful Christmas season, and stay healthy!

In the following, we, the Director of the Postdoc Center and the Postdoc Representation of CAU, would like to address you once again with information on what has kept us busy in 2020, what we have achieved and completed, and what tasks we see for 2021.

Since the beginning of 2020, we have developed the statutes of the Postdoc Center together with the former Vice President for Young Researchers and the Head of the Strategy and Planning Division. It has come into force with the publication of the Postdoc Center Statutes in the News Bulletin of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture on December 17, 2020. This completes the establishment of the Postdoc Center as a central institution of Kiel University and the committees (Board of Directors, Advisory Board and Postdoc Representation) can be officially filled. In order to prepare for this, the Postdoc Representation has drawn up bylaws and presented them to the Presidential Board. Here they were positively acknowledged. The bylaws now regulate the election procedure for the representation of postdocs working at Kiel University, as well as everything else concerning the representation. In particular, this clears the way for the election of a new postdoc representation at CAU, which will replace the current representation (Dr. Viktoria Bachmann, Dr. Sönke Burmeister, Dr. Meike Stumpp). The representation will play an important role in the Board of Directors of the Postdoc Center, as the group of postdocs will be represented by two persons, in addition to the Vice President for Young Researchers as spokesperson, one deputy and the director of the Center. In due time, we will invite you to a virtual plenary meeting of the target group of the Postdoc Center on February 2, 2021, 14:00-16:00. Here, in the first part, the new Vice President for Young Researchers of Kiel University will welcome you, furthermore, the Center will introduce itself again briefly and the program for Internal Research Funding of CAU will be introduced. In the second part, the election of a new postdoc representation will be initiated and we cordially invite you to run for this post. All members of the target group of the Postdoc Center are eligible to be elected, i.e. all postdoctoral researchers working at the university who are in the second phase of their scientific qualification. Since we define the term postdoc very broadly, junior professors are also eligible. Please consider whether a candidacy is possible for you; we will contact you at the beginning of 2021 with a query as to who would like to stand as a candidate. However, you can also express your interest now by sending a message to the address at postdoc-representation@pz.uni-kiel.de.

Since its establishment in summer 2018, more than 50 postdocs have taken up the offer of confidential, individual counseling at the Postdoc Center, more than 20 persons in 2020 alone. Most of the consultations concerned further career paths - both inside and outside of academia - but solutions were also sought for conflicts. This offer will of course continue in 2021! There is also the offer to work on one's own topic in the context of a coaching process available via the Continuing Professional Development Center after a consultation.

The action plan of the personnel development concept is also being implemented. The concept also includes measures to promote the careers of postdocs and junior professors - among other things: Information on academic career paths, regular career talks and support in pursuing non-university career paths. A first welcoming event for scientists below the professorship level who are new to CAU has already been implemented. Unfortunately, other events had to be cancelled due to Corona. Also implemented was a series of events on academic career paths and their legal framework, funding opportunities in the European and national context, and information on how to successfully write grant applications. This series is to be continued as an online event once per semester, alternating between German and English. A concept for the establishment of career reflections is still being worked on and agreed upon, which initially foresees career reflections for a pilot group of postdoctoral researchers.

With the Zukunftsvertrag Studium und Lehre stärken (ZSL - Strengthening Studies and Teaching), the federal and state governments intend to jointly and permanently improve the quality of studies and teaching from 2021 onwards as a successor to the Higher Education Pact and maintain study capacities in Germany in line with demand. Almost three million students will benefit from this. In particular, the permanent funding will support the expansion of permanent employment contracts for university staff involved in teaching and learning. To this end, we have remained in contact with the Presidential Board and the Academic Staff Council as representatives of our interests and have repeatedly submitted concrete proposals on categories and award modalities for the positions to be created. Information on the ZSL was repeatedly provided in the Senate, e.g. on December 16, 2020, where it was reported that the discussions on the ZSL with the Ministry will enter the final phase at the beginning of next year. It is planned to advertise temporary positions, permanent positions and professorships beginning in March.

An important milestone for the postdocs at CAU was the restructuring of the Standing Committee on Research (Wissenschaftskommission), so that the doctoral and postdoc representatives of CAU will each be represented there with one vote from 2020. The Presidential Board invites the deans of the faculties as well as the spokespersons of the Priority Research Areas to the Science Commission in order to discuss essential questions of coordination and strategic planning, primarily with regard to research. The Science Commission has, for example, selected the topic of the DenkRaum, which will start its first round in 2021.

As of November 15, Kiel University’s five DenkRaum Fellows have been chosen! On January 1, 2021 Dr. Viktoria Bachmann, Dr. Annika Hanert, Dr. Jonas Hein, Dr. Julia Kroh and Dr. Sören Weissermel will take up their DenkRaum fellowships. DenkRaum is a Kiel University think tank: in DenkRaum a societally relevant theme is explored jointly, through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration that transcends the boundaries of individual approaches. Over the next two years the philosopher, the psychologist, the economist and both geographers will work together and with actors from society, industry and politics to address the theme Urban Design.
